Architectural Sculpture

My students created sculptures based on architecture this semester.  We viewed some incredibly inspiring architecture and touched upon some of the movements that inspired these architects.

I know the pop ups that come in on the video are incredibly annoying, but the buildings are truly incredible!

The Sculpture and Mixed Media B students viewed movements such as blobism, organic architecture, modern, postmodern, futuristic and deconstructivist as well as a few others..They found that they really got excited about the visuals they were seeing even though many of them had never really thought of buildings as an artform.  After doing some reasearch students created pieces where they combined elements of 2-3 different buildings and created a non representational sculpture unlike anything they had ever seen before. Here are some of their results!

Students were able to choose any media that would best represent the feeling of the actual surface that they were trying to emulate.  The pieces above use cardboard, wire, plaster, papier mache, sculpey clay, spray paint, acrylic, rub 'n' buff.... I loved how their results are all so diverse based on the same concept or design problem.  This was our first go at this assignment, and I must say that the student results really impressed me!
